Child drowns in barrel of water

A two-year-old child drowned after falling into a barrel of water in Peresiawatta, Bagawantalawa yesterday.

The dead child was identified as Kalimuttu Diluppan.

The child’s parents had gone to collect firewood at the time of the incident, investigations revealed.

The inquest was held by the Inquirer into Sudden Deaths, Wardana Dhamalechchami who recorded a verdict of death due to drowning.

The child’s parents are estate labourers.

“I accompany my husband to collect firewood on holidays. On the day of the incident, we left the child with toys near a water tub. When we arrived, we found the child had fallen into the tub,” the child’s mother said.

Investigations are continuing.
