The Bachelor of Design Degree in Fashion Design and Product Development is one of the latest additions to the university system.

This course was commenced with a consultancy from the London College of Fashion which is funded by the government through the Ministry of Textile Industry Development and is supported by the entire apparel and textile industry.

Responding to an urgent need in the apparel export industry this course was commenced at the University of Moratuwa, Department of Textile and Clothing Technology in 2001.

It is a four years full-time degree course delivered in the vocational mode.

The students are exposed to a variety of skills such as drawing painting sketching illustration pattern making printing dyeing embroidery including experience in the industry in preparation to the final year.

The culmination of the fours year degree is a Catwalk Fashion Show presented in Colombo which is witnessed by more than 500 persons. The course aims to produce graduates who could enhance the value addition of the garments manufactured in the country.

The student chooses a concept based on a market segment and researches the customer, then creates designs and manufactures a collection of six outfits for a future season which is presented on the catwalk every year at this Graduation Fashion Show.

This is a model of the University, industry and government working together to produce employable graduated and to foster economic growth in the country.

The course gives and insight into how creative youth of the country could be trained to support the creative industries and how these could be commercialised.
