Pilgrims rest for devalaya

A resting pace for pilgrims is being set up at the Sabaragamu
Mahasaman Devalaya on the instructions of President Mahinda Rajapaksa.
This multistoreyed resting place will accommodate to 500 pilgrims at
a time.
A museum and an information unit will also be set up in the building.
The project is estimated to cost Rs 90,000,000.
Shortage of teachers

There is an acute shortage of Maths and Arts teachers in the
Katugastota Education Zone. According to statistics, more than 70
teachers are needed.
Metres for taxi drivers

Western Provincial Council Member Yasapala Koralage has launched a
programme to provide metres for taxi owners in Horana and Ingiriya
areas.
The first batch of 30 taxi drivers were provided with taxi metres at
a meeting held at Muwagama recently. A metre costs Rs. 13,000. Funds for
this project were granted by the Western Provincial Council.
Buddhist discussion
The next Buddhist panel discussion of the Colombo YMBA will be held
on Sunday, January 20 at 10.00 am at its Borella building on "Relevance
of Appamada in Buddhism".
The panelists are Panduka Mahanama, Retired Assistant Government
Valuer and now Consultant Valuer and Abhidhamma teacher, and Das
Miriyagalla, retired accountant and practising meditator, with Rajah
Kuruppu as moderator.
All are welcome.
Event to celebrate Prophet's Birthday
The All Ceylon Young Men's Muslim Association will hold an event at
Hamsa Vidyalaya in Modera on January 25, to celebrate the Prophet's
Birthday. The All Ceylon YMMA is holding the event for the 63rd year and
the programmes will begin at 4.00 pm. The keynote speech will be
delivered by Moulavi K M M Wajuhuddeen Rizvi from India.
Seminar
The cross cultural understanding initiative, dedicated to promoting
better understanding between different communities in the country, will
hold a seminar on "Improving mental well-being of mentally distressed
people" at the Bellart University Campus, A R de Mel Mawatha, Colombo 3
on January 24 at 10.30 am.

Wijitha Jayanthi (39) of Paragahakotunna, Kalawila, Beruwala is
suffering from chronic kidney disease and warded at the Colombo National
Hospital.
Consultant Nephrologist Dr R D Lanerolle has recommended a kidney
transplant to save her life. Jayanthi requests a person willing to
donate a 'A' positive kidney to facilitate the surgery, to contact her

A praise, worship and healing service will be held every Friday at

CMC general council meeting
The General Council Meeting of the Colombo Municipal Council for
January will be held at the Town Hall, Colombo 7 today at 10.30 am.
Election of members to form the 16 standing committees for the period
from January 1 to December 31 will be held at this meeting.
COSLAM lecture
The Conference of Sri Lankan Malays (COSLAM) and the Trustees of the
Wekanda Jumma Mosque Masjid will conduct the monthly lecture series ' In
the shade of the Holy Qur'an' will be held on January 20 from 10.30 am
to Luhar prayers at the Wekanda Jumma Masjid.
Devi Balika celebrates 60th anniversary
An exhibition has been organized by the Past Pupils of Devi Balika
Vidyalaya at the school premises from January 17 to 19. The exhibits
will depict the 60 year history of the school.
Inaugural ceremony
The Faculty of Law, University of Colombo in conjunction with the
Centre for the Study of Human Rights (CSHR) will inaugurate the Asia
Pacific Master's Degree Programme on Human Rights and Democratisation.
The ceremony will be held today at 3.00 pm at the Senate Hall, College
House, University of Colombo.
This programme funded by the EU is being offered for the second time
in collaboration with the University of Sydney (Australia), Gadja Mada
University (Indonesia), Kathmandu Law School (Nepal) and Mahidol
University (Thailand). |
