He was speaking as Chief Guest at the social interaction with the
diplomatic community which COYLE had organised at Hotel Hilton.
COYLE President Rohitha Silva pointed out that COYLE's collective
contribution to Sri Lanka's economy is about Rs. 600 billion. Having
begun 13 years back with a membership of only 17, today COYLE has 116
members owning or managing 750 companies which provide employment for
400,000 Sri Lankans.
Minister Peiris said that the youth dimension provides a new
perspective in the planning and implementation of economic policy, and
commented particularly on COYLE's consistent practice that members
relinquish their responsibilities on attaining 50 years. "Hope and
confidence are hallmarks of youth and the future belongs to them," he
said. The minister commented that there are constantly changing
priorities in diplomacy, and the focus at present is on economic
diplomacy. He welcomed with enthusiasm COYLE's initiative in arranging a
diplomatic evening, enabling their membership to share thoughts and
perspectives with the diplomatic community in a relaxed social setting.
He assured the leadership of COYLE of the strong support of the External
Affairs Ministry in building a closer relationship with the diplomatic
community.
Highlights of the event included the launching of the COYLE website.
A large number of ambassadors, High Commissioners and other diplomats
attended the event.
