Over 150 errant traders nabbed

A special raiding unit established under the Consumer Affairs
Authority (CAA) nabbed over 50 errant traders who violated regulations
of the Consumer Protection Act during the festive season.
"The errant traders were caught for breaching CAA Act No 9 of 2003
laws and regulations and suspects will be produced before Court
shortly," a CAA spokesman told the Daily News.
He said this special unit established on the instructions of
Co-operatives and Internal Trade Minister Johnston Fernando, conducted a
series of island wide raids during the festive season.
He said the unit has laid special emphasis to nab traders who
increased prices and mislead consumers during the festive season.
Officers will keep a close eye, especially on garment and electronic
items traders.
Traders who do not display price tags, use fake weighing and
measuring equipment, sell products over the stipulated price, mislead
consumers, sell expired goods, alter prices and sell items without a
warranty, deceptive conduct in selling items and sell goods which do not
have manufacturers' details in the packing will be fined.
