Trade exhibition and fair till Dec 30

The ‘Slash’ trade exhibition and fair which began at the Kandy City
Centre on December 21 will continue daily till December 30. Textiles,
garments, household items and other utility items will be available at
discounted prices to the public visiting the fair. There will also be
musical shows to entertain the visitors.
Timber racket

A lorry carrying 27 teak logs illegally, was caught with a person by
Dambulla Police. The accused was fined Rs 50,000 on being produced
before Dambulla District Judge and Magistrate S J Morawaka.
Bridge on the verge of collapse

The bridge across Balatotaoya on the Madawala-Sirimalwatta-Lewella
road in the Pathadumbara Pradeshiya Sabha area is on the verge of
collapse.
Road needs repair

The road from Pitiyegedara to Walala Gramaya in the Pathadumbara
Pradeshiya Sabha area is in a state of disrepair.
This road which is not repaired for several years, is full of pot
holes on rainy days.
Pepper in tea lands

A project has been implemented to grow pepper in tea lands in the
Pathadumbara, Panwila and Medamahanuwara Agrarian Services Division, by
the Export Agriculture Department.
Under this, pepper saplings were supplied free to cultivators by the
department.
Roads to be developed

The Central Provincial Rural Development Authority will improve the
condition of three roads in Pathadumbara and Kundasale Divisional
Secretariat Divisions at a cost of Rs nine million.
Madawala-Sirimalwatta, Lewella road, Udagama-Wawinna road and
Menikhinne-Narampanawa road will be improved.
Caught with Sambur flesh

Three men travelling in a three wheeler carrying 40 kilograms of
Sambur flesh were arrested by Dambulla Police.
Police said the suspects had killed the animal at a forest reserve in
the Kandalama area.
They were remanded on being produced before Dambulla acting
magistrate A H M Azme.
Post offices lag behind

Fax machines, photocopy machines and laminating machines at the
Kalutara main post office, Waskaduwa and Wadduwa post offices are out of
order.
Customers face much inconveniences as a result.
No e-mail facilities are available at any of these post offices.
Carbonic manure project

The Pathadumbara Pradeshiya Sabha will launch a carbonic manure
production plant utilizing the garbage collected from Madawala and
Ambatenna town areas. The factory to be set up at Pitiyegedara Wattegama,
is estimated to cost Rs 5 million.
Schools need Arts teachers

There is an acute shortage of Arts teachers in the Ibbagamuwa
education zone.
According to statistics, there are only 20 qualified art teachers in
the zone to teach arts subjects in 116 schools.
Exhibition
The North Central Provincial Agriculture and Livestock Exhibition
will be held at D S Senanayake Central School at Bamunakotuwa under the
patronage of Agricultural Minister Mahinda Yapa Abeywardana.
Felicitation
Dr Sarath Gunapala, one of the 30 senior scientists of the Jet
Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) attached to NASA will be felicitated at
Yatiyantota Siriwardena MV tomorrow.
Dr Gunapala of Yatiyantota is an old boy of Siriwardena NV and
Nalanda Vidyalaya, Colombo.
He graduated from Colombo University.
Senior Minister for Scientific Affairs Prof Tissa Vitharana,
Telecommunication and Information Technology Minister Ranjith
Siyambalapitiya and Deputy Minister H R Mithrapala will participated.
The road to Dr Gunapala's house will be named as Dr Sarath Gunapala
Mawatha.
Reception
The Moors' Islamic Cultural Home under the auspices of its Dawa and
Religious to committee will accord a reception to honour Muhammad
Rizkhan Rifdhi of Madheenathul lim Arabic College, Colombo 12, who
secured the first place in the International Quran Relical Competition
held in Makkah, Sudi Arabia recently where competitors from more than 80
countries participated.
The reception will be held on December 28 at the MICH premise at
"Pasha Villa", No. 115 Dematagoda Road, Colombo 9.
Silpa from Dec 27 to 30
Silpa 2012 National Exhibition and Trade Fair on handicrafts and
small and medium industries will be held at the Sirimavo Bandaranaike
Exhibition Centre at the BMICH from December 27 to 30.
The exhibition is organised annually.
Journalist dies in accident
Chaminda Perera
A journalist of an English daily died in an accident at Rosmead
Place, Colombo 7 yesterday. She was going to office when the mishap
occurred. Amila Mendis Jayasinghe sustained serious injuries after she
was run over by a lorry.
Police said the driver lost control of the vehicle and crashed into a
wall killing Jayasinghe. The driver was arrested.
