Floods affect 1,804 families in A'pura

Anuradhapura Additional District Secretary K.B. Hettiarachchi told the Daily News that the total number of flood victims in Anuradhapura district in 1,804 families which include 6,643 persons.

About 933 families (consisting 3,246 persons) are being sheltered in 37 flood relief camps with cooked food, drinking water, medicine being provided under the supervision of Divisional Secretaries.

Hettiarachchi said the balance are staying with their relatives and friends.

The flood threat in the Anuradhapura city and the suburbs is decreasing. The main danger zone is the downstream of Malawathu-Oya, carrying surplus water being disposed by the Nachchaduwa tank, Hettiarachchi said.

Meanwhile, Mannar District Secretary Sarath Ravindra said nearly 1,000 families in Nanattan and Madu Road Divisional Secretariat Divisions have been affected due to the flood situation in Malawattu -Oya down stream areas. He said the affected families are being sheltered in school buildings and government office buildings in the area.

He said the level of the Malwathu Oya has increased from 14 feet to 15.5 feet by Monday noon.
