Flood-hit rises to over 275,900

Floods have affected 275,982 persons belonging to 75,234 families up to date, a spokesman for the Disaster Management Centre said yesterday.

The spokesman said 34 persons have died following floods and landslides while nine are reported missing.

Twenty two who were injured, have been hospitalised. Nearly 149 evacuation centres have been set up in 13 districts. Thirty four evacuation centres have been set up in the Batticaloa district, 23 in Anuradhapura, 18 in Matale, 16 in Polonnaruwa, 15 in Vavuniya and seven each in Kurunegala and Trincomalee districts.

Eighteen centres have been set up in Kandy, Puttalam, Hambantota and Nuwara- Eliya districts and one in the Mullaitivu district.

Meanwhile, around 3,269 houses were fully damaged while 8,075 houses were partially damaged due to floods and landslides. Irrigation and Water Management Ministry Secretary Ivan de Silva said other than Huruluwewa and Randenigala reservoirs, all other tanks are over flowing. He said the other two tanks have also reached spill level.
