Priority to improve War Heroes’ living standards - Defence

The government implemented a number of projects to help improve the
living standards of War Heroes and the provision of 50,000 houses is one
of them in this regard, Defence and Urban Development Ministry Secretary
Gotabhaya Rajapaksa said yesterday.

The Ranajayapura housing project, Ipalogama is one such project,
carried out by the Defence Ministry on the advice of the Defence
Secretary, to provide welfare facilities to War Heroes.
Twenty three War Heroes, including a disabled War Hero were allocated
shops on the occasion. Twelve Army, five Navy and six Air Force War
Heroes will commence their businesses at the two storey shopping complex
at the Ipalogama housing scheme.
The Defence Secretary addressing recipients of business premises of
the shopping complex constructed at the Ranajayapura Housing Scheme,
said Ranajayapura is a concept under the Mahinda Chinthana programme,
the President’s vision for the country’s future. Ranajayapura is the
largest ever housing project built for the War Heroes, consisting of
1,509 completed houses with all modern amenities.
He said the houses were constructed after obtaining a bank loan which
has to be settled by the Defence Ministry. Apart from the allocations of
the loan, the government allocated millions for infrastructure
facilities at the housing scheme. Besides the shopping complex, the
housing scheme includes a super market, a Bank of Ceylon branch, a
primary school a daycare unit, nursery, community hall and a hospital
together with infrastructure facilities, including pipe borne water,
electricity, roads etc.
