Several professionals representing many fields expressed their views on the impeachment and the people’s sovereignty at a seminar organised by the People’s Campaign for Justice at the Foundation Institute on Wednesday. Patriotic National Movement president and prominent writer Dr Gunadasa Amarasekera said Chief Justice Shirani Bandaranayake has played a political role in deciding to sit in judgment over the Divi Neguma Bill. He said this was in defiance of a ruling by Justice Mark Fernando that she should not be a part of Benches hearing political cases on devolution. Dr. Amarasekera said the Chief Justice had made political comments on the subject of devolution of power.

Shooting near MP’s house: President orders full scale inquiry into incident

President Mahinda Rajapaksa visited United National Party Parliamentarian and Bar Association president Wijedasa Rajapakshe’s house at Nawala yesterday after he came to know that Rajapakshe’s residence had come under attack, Presidential Media Coordinating Secretary Wijayananda Herath said.

Sri Lanka, Afghanistan to broaden bilateral ties

Afghan Foreign Minister Dr Zalmai Rassoul, who is on a four-day visit to Sri Lanka met President Mahinda Rajapaksa at the Presidential Secretariat yesterday. “I am very proud to be the first Foreign Minister of Afghanistan to visit Sri Lanka,” Dr Rassoul told President Rajapaksa. “The Afghan people consider you a friend, and we are honoured.”
