Sports Minister donates Rs five hundred thousand for Guy de Alwis

Sports Minister Mahindananda Aluthgamage donated five hundred
thousand rupees from the Sports Fund yesterday for the medical expenses
of former Sri Lanka Test cricketer Guy de Alwis, who is suffering from a
serious illness.
The 53-year-old de Alwis represented Sri Lanka from 1983 to 1989 as a
wicketkeeper batsman. He played in the 1983 World Cup tournament in
England as a specialist wicket keeper. The right handed batsman played
11 Test matches for the country including the first Test match at the
Bellerive Oval, Hobart in 1987, where he was involved in dismissing
Australian opener Mark Taylor caught behind off Rumesh Ratnayake as the
first wicket in the Bellerive Oval in 1987.
Guy de Alwis successfully coached Sri Lanka women's cricket team a
few years ago. Guy de Alwis played for S Thomas' from 1976 to 1979 and
later turned out for the SSC.
