Heavy rains trigger landslide threat in Kurunegala

Heavy rains in the Kurunegala District have caused landslide threats
in Morathiha, Erapolakanda, Babaragahakanda and Kobbegalakanda in the
Dodangaslanda electorate. The Rideegama Divisional Secretary has warned
the people to be in safer locations and all the shops in Rideegama town
have been closed due to heavy rain and thunder.
Low-lying areas of Galgamuwa, Nikawaratiya, Wariyapola, Melsiripura
and Hettipola are reported to be heavily flooded.
Deduru Oya, Mee Oya, Ma Oya and Maguru Oya overflows and crops too
have been washed away according to latest reports.
Kurunegala District Secretary H M B Hitisekara yesterday announced
that around 2,000 families in Wayamba have been affected due to floods
and heavy rains. He said 8 wards in Kurunegala Teaching Hospital was
completely damaged and patients transferred to Mawathagama, Dambadeniya
and Polgahawela hospitals.
Meanwhile, 42 families in Theliyagonna are affected due to
overflowing of Wennaruwa tank and they have been evacuated to safer
locations, the Secretary said.
