Vijitha Bandara in clear lead

Vijitha Bandara of Royal Colombo Golf Club (RCGC) took 'centre stage' and established a seemingly unassailable lead of 7 strokes from overnight joint leader Tissa Chandradasa to remain in lead after two rounds in the UTE-CAT Open Golf Championship worked off for the second day at the RCGC yesterday.

Vijitha brimming with confidence, on the back of an opening round of 66, reeled off 7 birdies on the 1st, 2nd, 6th, 10th, 13th, 14th,15th and capped it all with an eagle '3' on the par 5, 7th hole to record his career best nine under par 62 in an unblemished perfect round which was just one shot short of the course record of 10 under par held by the defending Champion Anura Rohana.

Lalith Kumara remained in 3rd place with a 1 under par 70, to stand alone on 5 under par. Defending Champ Anura Rohana shot a 3 under par, for a 3 way tie in 4th place on 4 under par with, M. Amarapadma and Mithun Perera. The two Sri Lankan pro's who have excelled in the Indian PG Tour and Mithun has won the 'TATA Open' recently. But the pro duo seemed to struggle with the change of conditions on the green and the length of the course. However, there is nothing that can be taken away from the leader Vijitha Bandara at the half way mark simply stunning the pro's with a substantial lead standing clear and alone on 14 under par.

The UTE-CAT Challenge Trophy for the best Amateur member (gross score over 2 rounds) was won by Sheron Fernando who shot a brilliant two under par 69, 10 strokes clear of the runner up Pan Sung Kim. The 2 round tournament was extremely eventful with 13-year old Armand Flamer Caldera winning the best nett score in the Handicap Category of 15-28, playing off a 26 handicap playing to a 2 under par total of 140. Pan Sunk Kim returned an astonishing nett 61 in the second round to record the best nett score over two rounds in the 14 and below handicap category.

The UTE-CAT Challenge Trophy (for the best gross score) winner Sheron Fernando was placed 18th in the UTE-CAT Open at the halfway stage, while last year winner Sanjiv Vairavanathan did not complete the two rounds.
