Chairman of the Association, D P Mendis PC said the Constitution has
clearly mentioned the procedure to be followed when an impeachment is
tabled before Parliament.
According to the guidelines of the Constitution, a Parliamentary
Select Committee (PSC) has been appointed to probe into the allegations
levelled in the impeachment.
The impeachment motion containing 14 charges is being probed by the
PSC.
Lawyer Champani Padmasekara said supreme power is with the people of
the country even though, the executive, legislature and judiciary
performs their own roles.
"The supreme law is the Constitution," he added.
"However, various parties are spreading baseless views and ideas
regarding this constitutional function taken by Parliament with a view
to plunge the country into anarchy. It is clear that they are performing
and putting into practise their hidden agendas,' he said. The members
requested the people not to fall prey to those people with their hidden
agendas.
