The Railway trade unions yesterday decided to suspend its 24 hour
token strike which was to commence from today following a discussion
with Tansport Minister Kumara Welgama and Ministry officials.
The trade unions decided to launch an island wide token strike as the
authorities have failed to solve their issues related to salaries and
grades of Railway employees. The trade union representatives who
participated at the discussion with the Minister said their action is
aimed at persuading the Salaries and Cadre Commission to come out with
viable solution to their problems.
It was revealed at the meeting that the necessary information with
regard to employees' salaries and their grades have been forwarded to
the Salary and Cadre Commission by the Ministry.
They said that their action is not against the Minister nor the
ministry officials. Transport Minister Kumara Welgama assured the TU
representatives that the issues will be addressed.
