Plans are underway to setup 156 secondary schools in the Central
Province, Chief Minister Sarath Ekanayake said.
Financial allocations have already been allocated for this, he said.
The Chief Minister speaking at the annual prize awarding ceremony of
Swarnapali Balika Maha Vidyalaya, Kandy recently said parents judge a
school from the number of students who pass the Grade 5 scholarship, GCE
O-L or GCE A-L examinations.
“This is wrong. Though schools are equipped with competent teaching
staff with up to date facilities, students are different from one to
another,” he said. “Each students' capability is different. While some
students are clever in academic subjects, others excel in sports.”
A feature of a good school is identifying a student's capacity and
clearing the path for him and giving him a helping hand to brush up his
talent, the Chief Minister said.
Ekanayake said Principals' duties are to create a student generation
whose prime objective is to serve the country and be all rounders in
taking up challenges.
The government will set up 1,500 secondary and primary schools before
the end of 2013, he said.
The Central Province is ready to reach that target by establishing
156 secondary schools in the province soon, he said.
