Chamara Dabare, and Nuwan Hettiarachchi who played a key role in the
success of Nation Lanka Finance in the Mercantile Rugby Sevens
Tournament were richly rewarded when they were picked as the most
outstanding player of the tournament and "man of the final" after the
conclusion of the tournament.
Dabare who had an excellent season for Havelocks went on to play for
Sri Lanka in the Borneo Rugby Sevens of the HSBC Asian Sevens Series and
had the rare honour of scoring the only try for Sri Lanka against mighty
Japan. Hettiarachchi, an old Rajan is a utility player who had fared
exceptionally well as full back and winger for Havelocks, CH and FC,
Navy and Kandy SC .
Chamara Dabare the former Royal, Havelocks and Sri Lanka winger had
an outstanding tournament scoring tries in virtually every match and
received the Mohan Daniel Memorial Trophy for thr most outstanding
player from former Zahira and Havelocks ruggerite Neville Daniel , the
brother of the late Mohan Daniel. Hettiarachchi, who played a vital role
both as a player and a place kicker was awarded the Pemraj Peiris
Memorial Trophy by former CR and FC skipper and Sri Lanka Centre
Rohantha Peiris, the brother of the late Pemraj Peiris.
Former Anthonian skipper and Kandy SC full back Tharindu Chanaka, of
Dialog 'A' was picked as the most promising player in the Plate
Championship while the best up and coming player in the bowl
championship was Hashan Maduranga of John Keells "B" . Incidentally,
Maduranga had a fine season for Science College as a winger and went on
to represent Sri Lanka Youth team in the Asian Under 19 tournament in
Colombo. |
