Three drown

Three men of Kiriwanaketiya, Dellawa in the Neluwa Police area drowned in the Dellawaela stream after they were dragged away by swirling flood water while walking on an inundated foot bridge over the stream.

Their bodies recovered by Neluwa Police were identified as those of Lokuge Dharmadasa, 57, Kodituwakku Arachchige Somasiri, 45, and Anura Kumarasiri, 36, of Kiriwanaketiya, Dellawa.


Coconut saplings distributed

One hundred and fifty thousand coconut saplings were distributed free among families in 50 Grama Niladhari divisions in the Imbulpe Divisional Secretariat Division under the Divineguma programme at the Ratmalawinna Agrarian Services Centre recently. Imbulpe PS chairman Indu Gunathilaka and PS members and government officials participated.


Housing for family

Care Lanka Foundation of the Netherlands has come forward to provide a newly built house to a needy family in Habaraduwa on the initiative of the Galle YMBA. The beneficiaries of this programme is the family of T.G. Sunil who had sold all his properties to save the life of his daughter.

T.G. Chamila who had been suffering from an acute heart ailment. However, the girl had succumbed to her illness and Sunil’s family had been thrown to the streets without a house to live in.


Spice cultivation promoted

A programme has been implemented to promote ginger and turmeric cultivations in the Balangoda Agrarian Services Division by the Export Agriculture Department in collaboration with the Gamidiriya Balangoda office, said Balangoda Project officer of Export Agriculture Department H.P. Ratnasiri. About 400 formers were given training in the cultivations providing ginger and turmeric free.


Student knocked down

A student, returning home after school, was killed on a pedestrian crossing by a lorry.

The victim is H.D. Ashen Pasindu Kumara, an eight year old student of Anurudda Kanista Vidyalaya, Nawalapitiya. The driver of the lorry was taken into Police custody.


Costly porn scenes

A man who pleaded guilty to having a cellular phone with pornographic scenes in his possession, was fined Rs. 3,500 by Hatton District Magistrate Amila Ariyaratne recently.

The suspect was taken into custody in the Ginigathena town by Ginigathena Police.


Plan to extend grasslands

The Central Provincial Agriculture and Livestock Development Ministry which takes steps to up milk production in the Central province, has come up with a plan to extend rich green grasslands in the province for cattle to feed on. Distributing high quality grass among dairy farmers is the main activity in the programme. About 2000 farmers have been selected for the initial stage.


Kolam Natya to raise funds

'Sinhala Kolam Natya' staging of will take place today at 3 pm at the John de Silva's Theatre, Colombo.

This is organized by the Welfare Society of Provincial Secretariat, Thimbirigasyaya. Drama is staged by Ambalangoda Ariyapala veteran in this field.

The dramas are staged to collect funds to help those who are displaced owing to unexpected causes and natural disasters.

There will be two shows one at 3 pm and the other at 6 pm.


Book launch

A book named 'Sri Lankan Heritage' containing historical places and description of beautiful sites will be launched today at 9.30 am at the Galle Face Hotel, Colombo.

National Heritage Minister Dr. Jagath Balasuriya will be the chief guest at the launching of the book.


Memorial service

A memorial service to remember the past De Mazenod College, Rev. Brothers, teachers, students and service personnel has been organized by the Kandana De Mazenod Old Boys' Association.

The Memorial Service will be held on November 30 at 6 pm at the college chapel and Holy Mass will be offered by College Chaplain Rev Fr Chrishantha Fernando.

Family members of the deceased, members of the OBA and well-wishers are expected to attend this event.

The President and Council Members of the OBA invite all Old Mazenodians to participate in this Memorial Service to remember the departed Brothers, teachers and colleagues.


National Arts Festival in Yakkala

The National Arts Festival organized by the National Youth Corps to develop artistic talents of trainees attached to youth corps centres to national level will be held at the Yakkala Youth Corps Training Centre on November 29 and 30.

There will be nearly 20 items to evaluate dancing, singing and other musical talents of the trainees.

Some of the items will be held in Tamil as a special feature. After enabling the participants to fine-tune their talents at this festival they will be introduced to the national level at the 'Paurushabhimana' festival which will held at the end of this year, said a press release by the National Youth Corps.


D A Rajapaksa Oration

D A Rajapaksa Commemorative Oration organized by the Rajapaksa Memorial Educational, Cultural and Social Services Foundation, will be held at Temple Trees today at 4.30 pm.

Dr Amal Gunasena, Senior Researcher and Lecturer, School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London, will deliver the memorial lecture.

The theme of his talk will be formation of a developed, unitary Sri Lankan state through a trilingual culture after the influence of the Social Transformation from the British period to modern times.

Most Ven Davuldena Gnanissara Mahanayaka Thera of the Sri Lanka Amarapura Sect will preside over the commemorative meeting.


Public talk

Dhamma Weerakone will give a public talk in English on 'Seeing the Buddha' at the meeting of the Servants of the Buddha Society on December 1 at 4.30 pm at Maithree Hall, Lauries Road, Bambalapitiya.


Two drown at Ranmudu Ella

Two persons are believed to have drowned while bathing at Ranmudu Ella, Thunmodara on Tuesday evening.

Hanwella Police commenced a search for the bodies of W B Indrajith, 50, of Makola and A D K Dias, 28, of Kelaniya.
