Temple open for public veneration
Two hundred years old Vyravar temple in the Jaffna Fort was opened
for public veneration after it was consecrated by Maha Abishekam.
This temple was built by the prisoners and Hindu devotees during the
Dutch period. The opening ceremony was attended by Archaeological
researcher and Professor of history, Jaffna University Dr Pushpaatnam,
Coordinator of Archaeological Department Somathilake and the
archaeological students of Jaffna University.
Demo seeking business places
Shopkeepers at the Kilinochchi market staged a demonstration
demanding permission be granted to them to conduct businesses in the
market building.
The demonstration started from Kilinochchi market and marched to the
Kilinochchi Secretariat and handed over a memorandum requesting
allocation be made in the market for them to conduct businesses. The
District Secretary said that the issue had gone to Courts and an interim
order has been made and nothing could be done until the issue was
decided by the Courts.
Karthigesu Pulavar statue
A statue of Hindu Icon Karthigesu Pulavar has been erected on the
Eastern side of Paralai Murugan temple.
This statue was sculptured by South Indian sculptors. Karthigesu
Pulavar was an authority in the interpretation of Skanda Purana Verses.
He has also published volumes on Skanda Uthayakandam. He was a lay
preacher on Skandapuranam and had conducted discourses during the Skanda
Sasdi fast periods. He is an icon venerated by the Hindus for his
meticulous interpretation of Hindu Puranas.
Student drowns
A six-year-old student drowned in a well when he and his mates jumped
into a well which was brimful of water to practise swimming.
