Inclement weather kills two

Two persons died and many low lying areas in the Hambantota, Matara
and Nuwara Eliya districts were inundated due to inclement weather
conditions that prevailed in the Southern and Central Provinces for the
past two days.
According to a spokesman of the Disaster Management Centre,
Mulatiyana, Koramburuwana, Makandura Didenipotha roads in the Southern
Province were indundated at a number of places forcing motorists to use
alternative roads.
A person was buried alive after a mound of earth fell on his house in
Kahawatte while another person died in Ambalantota after a wall
collapsed in his house.
He said 2,100 people belonging to 442 families were affected by the
heavy rains in the Southern Province. About 364 people from 76 families
were also affected by the inclement weather conditions in the Nuwara
Eliya district.
Over 300 people from 76 families in the Ambagamuwa, Kotamale,
Divisional Secretariat divisions have also been evacuated to Lakshapana
Walamala School, Walamala primary school and Wawandan estates. Over 160
schools in the district were partially damaged by the heavy rain, he
said.
