The impeachment motion against the Chief Justice should be dealt with
under the existing constitution as it protects the sovereignty of people
and their dignity, Irrigation and Water Resources Management Minister
and leader of the House Nimal Siripala de Silva said in Parliament
yesterday.
He observed it is under the existing constitution that several
impeachment motions were presented in the past against former Chief
Justices. He said the UNP when presenting these impeachment motions did
not think it necessary that the constitution should be changed.
The minister made these comments participating in the committee stage
debate of budget 2013.
