Swedish Classic Golf today
S.M. Jiffrey Abdeen- Kandy Sports Correspondent
The tenth version of the Swedish Classics 2012, a golf championship
organised by the Swedish Community in Sri Lanka in conjunction with the
Victoria Golf and Country Resort will be worked off at the beautiful
Victoria golf course at Rajawella, off Kandy today with the first tee
off at 7 a.m.
Last year this major golf championship attracted nearly 125 golfers
not only from Sri Lanka but also from the Soandinavian countries, Middle
East, Malaysia, Japan, Singapore and India making it a golf
extravaganza.
This was disclosed to the media by the Manager Marketing and Events
of Victoria Golf and Country Resort Ms. Dhanushika Medagoda.
This major golf championship has its origins ten years ago when five
times World Motororess champion Rolf Tibblin from Sweden decided to have
a golf tournament to celebrate his birthday and called the championship
the ‘Rolfs Cup’ which too attracted over 80 entries and a grand party
followed at his residence.
Since then this golf championship has made giant strides and came to
be known as Swedish Golf Classics with many other events added on in
addition to the attractive prizes for it to stake the claim that it is
one of the biggest and most glamorous of All Golf Championships.
This golf championship though re-named has not altered its original
look as the ‘Rolfs Cup’ is still presented and that legendary figure
Rolf Tibblin personally makes the presentations. This is for senior men
golfers over 65 years of age. Those eligible for participation in this
event should disclose their age in the entry form and belated disclosure
could create problems for the Organising Committee.
The Rolf's Cup has been won on many occasions by that seasoned golfer
Englishman Ian Tait and others in running for this event are Rowland
Davies, Tony Witham, Sirath Kasthuriratne, and Rolf Tibblin himself.
Last year English lady Linda Harris smashed the male dominated
Swedish Classics by becoming the first lady to win this title. Linda
Harris will be there this year to defend her title but she will be given
a testing time by top lady golfers like Niloo Jayatillake, Suven
Selvarathnam, Manori Jayakody with Indira Tibblin, Pauline Morley and
Roshni Sangani too capable of creating an upset.
The Australian born General Manager of Victoria Golf and Country
Resort Errol Johnston said we are ready to host this major golf
championship and the golf course is in best possible condition following
the showers experienced in this area which put an end to a six month
drought which left the course parched. But constant watering kept the
greens in topping condition and came in for a lot of praise from
golfers. As usual the course is going to be challenging and the golfers
are going to enjoy it to the maximum.
The entries are still open and the organisers may restrict it to 100
on a first some first served basis. Entry forms are available are the
Royal Colombo Golf Club, Nuwara Eliya Golf Club and the Victoria Golf
and Country Resort. For further details please contact the Marketing
Manager Dhanushika Medagoda on Mobile No. 0727840894 or 0777840894 or
