Son assaults mum
A man and his wife assaulted his mother fracturing her hand and hip
bone. The incident took place at Nallur in Poonagary on Monday.
It is alleged that the son and his wife assaulted her with a club
while she was on her way to fetch water from a well.
The man's father was also assaulted when he intervened. The mother
and father were admitted to hospital.
Red onion price up
The price of red onions has shot up by Rs 20 per kilogram in Jaffna.
Heavy rains caused the sudden increase in prices. Stagnation of water in
lands hamper plantation of onions.
More land under potatoes cultivation
Forty hectares will be utilised for potatoe cultivation in the Jaffna
peninsula. Last season, potatoes were cultivated in 22.5 hectares.
Ratnasingham bring honour to SL
Ratnasingham Senthooran of Jaffna Hindu College brought fame to his
college and the country by winning the Silver medal in the Track and
Field competition for athletes under 16 years in Melbourne at Albert
Park by scaling 1.95 metres and winning the second place in the
competition. He broke the record of 1.92 metre in high jump for the
athletes under 16 years. He is the only athlete from Sri Lanka, who
scaled 1.95 metres at an international athletic meet. Eight Sri Lankan
athletes participated in the competition.
Jewellery stolen
Jewellery of a woman travelling in a bus from Vathiry to Nelliyady
was stolen. She had kept her 15 gold sovereign jewellery in her hand
bag.
The jewellery is worth over Rs 700,000.
The jewellery had been stolen from her hand bag in the crowded bus.
She found her hand bag cut and jewellery stolen. Karaveddy Police are
investigating.
Allaipiddy needs Police supervision
The residents of Allaipiddy appealed to the Inspector General of
Police asking for Police supervision and protection. Robberies, illegal
brewing, thefts of cattle and goats, drunken brawls and sexual abuses
have increased in the area.
One has to go to Kayts, a distance of 12 miles, to lodge a complaint.
Kayts Police do not patrol the area regularly.
APolice station at Allaipiddy will bring down the crime rate at
Allaipiddy, Mankumban and Velanai areas, residents said.
Helping hand for Mullaithivu fishermen
The Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Development Department in
Mullaithivu will issue boats, fishing nets and motor engines to
fishermen who had lost their fishing equipment during the war.
Twenty five boats, 45 catamarans and 40 out door motor engines will
be issue to them. Meanwhile, public waiting halls are being built at
Iranvallai Nayarn and Kokilai at a cost of Rs 1.5 million per hall. |
