Worker electrocuted

A 55-year-old worker who was taken to Ashrof hospital after being electrocuted at a construction site in Kalmunai was pronounced dead upon admission. I L M Hanifa of Natipatti died in the incident. Kalmunei Police are investigating.

Fish store gutted

A fish collecting store in Mannar was gutted in a fire on Sunday around 10 pm. According to Police an electric short circuit might have ignited the fire. Mannar Police are investigating.

Locally made gun brings death

A security officer at a holiday resort in Kegalle died after a locally made shot gun accidentally triggered while he was checking it on Saturday. The Kegalle Police reported that the victim, 28-year-old H Samantha of Thalawathugoda who was a security officer at the hotel faced the mishap while consuming liquor with the manager of the hotel and another worker. The victim had taken a locally made shot gun which was in possession of the manager to check for its operation. The hammer of the weapon had been stuck the first time he checked it but fired the second time when he aimed at his head. The police arrested the manager of the hotel and found the murder weapon with two T56 bullets in his room. He has been remanded until November 23 by Kegalle magistrate.

Chain snatcher caught

The Wennappuwa Police on Sunday arrested a suspect who was caught by the people while fleeing after attempting to snatch a chain from a woman in Nainamadama. The suspect had arrived on a motorbike with another man to reach the woman who was also riding a motorbike. After their unsuccessful attempt they had started to ride away when suddenly the bike toppled.

The people in the vicinity then caught the pillion rider while the other escaped. The Police found two gold chains in suspect's possession. He was admitted to Marawila hospital due to injuries sustained when he fell off the bike and then transferred to Colombo National hospital for further treatment. Wennappuwa Police have commenced a search operation to arrest the other suspect.

Bike thief arrested.

Samanthurai Police on Saturday arrested a suspect who allegedly stole a Rs 45,000 worth motorbike while the suspect was riding the stolen motorbike in Karathivu. He was produced in Samanthurai magistrate court yesterday.

Man, woman arrested for van swindle

Ampara Police Special Crime Investigations Branch arrested a man and woman who had cheated Rs 3.55 million by selling a van that they had rented. The duo had produced forged documents to their identity before selling the van. Police arrested them following a complaint lodged by the man who bought the van when he realized he had been deceived. The suspects, residents of Wattegama and Nindavur were produced in Dehiaththakandiya magistrate court where the man has been remanded until November 19 and the woman was released on bail.

Unidentified man killed by train

Rathgama Police have commenced an investigation into the death of an unidentified man whose body was found hit by a train plying from Galle to Maradana at Rillamba, Rathgama yesterday around 5am.

The 5'4" tall man with a long beard appears to be of 40 years of age. Police seek public assistance to identify the body.
