The Merekele forest and hermitage situated close to the Thalawitiya
and Paranagama village off Eheliyagoda has become a tourist attraction,
it is reported.
This 250-acre protected natural forest is abound with a variety of
fauna and flora and is home to various reptile and bird species.
The Merekele forest is also home to an array of animals like wild
boar,lizard, porcupine and a large number of chameleons. Several jungle
brooks flow continuously through the forest into the ‘Paranagama Wewa’.
Merekele Sri Rohana Hermitage Chief Incumbent the Ven Ilukpotha
Sirinivasa Nayake Thera said the reserve has become a favourite among
local and foreign tourists and schoolchildren who visit this place
during the holiday season.
