Obama to meet Suu Kyi, Myanmar President in Yangon
US: Barack Obama will meet Myanmar democracy icon Aung San Suu Kyi
and President Thein Sein on a historic first visit to the country by a
sitting US President designed to boost a political reform drive.
The White House said Thursday that Obama would also visit Thailand
and attend the East Asia summit in Cambodia on the November 17-20 trip,
which will mark his return to the world stage following his re-election.
During a few hours in Myanmar, Obama will deepen his administration's
support for the startling reform process launched by Thein Sein that has
seen Suu Kyi, who was under house arrest for years, become a member of
parliament.
The President is also expected to make a speech to civil society
groups and may make a stop at a cultural site in Yangon.
