Food crop cultivation drive begins

The Sri Lanka Hadabima Authority has made arrangements to launch a special programme to plant additional food crops. Around 1,000 farmer families will participate in this programme, Sri Lanka Hadabima Authority chairman Nandasena Herath said.

The authority selected 1,000 farming families from Sevanagala and Thanamalwila divisional secretariats in the Monaragala district to commence the programme.

The special programme will be launched under the National Agriculture Policy implemented by the Agriculture Ministry.

The Hadabima Authority aims to plant additional food crops all over the island and save money spent to import food crop, Herath said. The Hadabima Authority provided ground nuts, cowpea, green gram and undu among farmers in certain areas. They have also been provided equipment and modern technology. The Authority hopes to reap a good harvest by the next Maha season, the chairman said.
