Indian women emerge team world champions

Defending champions Sri Lankan women slicers were sent crashing out
by Indians in the final of the team championship when the Sixth World
Carrom Championship continued yesterday at the Galadari Hotel, Colombo.
Current woman world champion, India’s I. Illabazhaki, who
competed against Sri Lanka’s top seed Joseph Roshita
(unseen), aiming to pot a piece during the women’s team
championship final against Sri Lanka at the sixth World
Carrom Championship held in Galadari, Colombo yesterday.

Sri Lankan women carromites, who won the team championship in the
previous edition, held in France, lost in straight three sets to India’s
I. Illabazhaki, Kavitha Somanchi and Rashmi Kumari.
Meanwhile, at the time of going to press, the host country’s men
slicers were playing in the semi-finals in the 16-nation tournament,
defeating Germany in the quarter-final.
Sri Lanka’s Chamil Cooray beat German Thomas Scheurel in straight two
sets 25-0 and 25-0. Lanka’s top seed Nishantha Fernando overcame Tobias
Kruger in the same style 25-0 and 25-0 while Mohammed Sherifdeen toppled
Wolfgana Peter 25-1 and 25-13.
Top teams, Sri Lanka and India qualified for semi-finals along with
Canada and Bangaldesh. The two winners will meet in the finals of the
men’s team championship today. |
