Azwer fears threat to life

UNP National List MP A H M Azwer has drawn the attention of the Deputy Speaker of Parliament about a possible threat to his life rising from a statement made by JVP MP Anura Kumara Dissanayake on the floor of the House on October 11, 2012.

Making reference to what appeared in Thinakkural newspaper on October 12 aid his response to the alleged statement.MP Azwer has requested that appropriate action be taken in this regard.

According to the Hanzard dated Oct. 19 Azwer said, Sir, I must tell you something as it is my duty. Yesterday, when you were presiding - it is reported in today's "Thinakkural" newspaper - a death threat was issued to me in this House. (The member quotes the report)

"If that is a threat, Sir, I consider it not as a veiled threat - it is against another Parliamentarian, a citizen of this country."

Sir, if such a thing happens, I think I must warn Parliament as to who should be held responsible. I will bring this to the notice of the Security Forces and the Hon. Speaker as well. And Sir, you also must take action."
