Housing units and hostels for university community

Construction of housing units and hostels to the value of Rs 447 million for the university community had been completed within 2011 and 2012, said construction, Engineering Services, Housing and Common Amenities Minister Wimal Weerawansa yesterday.

He made these observations in Parliament in response to a question raised by UNP MP Sajith Premadasa.

Minister Weerawansa said the construction of housing units to the value of Rs 1,682 million commenced during these two years.

The minister said these constructions were completed close to the South-Eastern University, North-Western University, Jaffna University and Sabaragamuwa University.

The minister said the programme was executed in accordance with the wish of the university community.

This programme was initiated in the government’s bid to construct 5,000 houses close to universities to provide housing needs of the university communities in line with the pledge made under the Samata Nivasak-Hithata Sevanak programme of the Mahinda Chinthanaya.
