Bumper Big Onion harvest in Suriyawewa

Suriyawewa farmer S J H Premadasa grading his Big Onion harvest after drying.

Farmers in the Suriyawewa Divisional Secretariat Division who cultivated Big Onions under the auspicies of the Agriculture Ministry have recorded a bumper harvest this season.

Farmers said they cultivated Big onions without using carbonic manure or agro - chemicals.

The dry weather conditions in the region helped to protect the cultivations by keeping insects and fungus at bay.

Farmer SJH Premadasa said he was able to record a harvest of 15,000 kilogrammes of Big onions from a one acre plot.

Agriculture Research and Production Officer P Lakshman said they hoped to further extend Big onion cultivation in the area during the Maha season.
