More schoolchildren suffering from diabetes

A senior doctor attached to the Kurunegala Teaching Hospital told the media yesterday a number of schoolchildren in Wayamba

are suffering from diabetes due to consuming artificial food and soft drinks. He said those who eat artificial food are over-weight. These foods have very limited nutritional value. Fried fast food and carbonated beverages have become a staple diet.

He explained these foods do not have enough proteins and vitamins. Physicians can educate parents and stop their children from eating pre-packed snacks and drinks. A senior doctor said a balanced diet is important for schoolchildren. Some children bring pre-packed food and water to drink. The parents must encourage children to drink fresh water.
