Over Rs 20 m in fines from power pirates

The CEB earned an income of Rs 20,399,058.57 following raids conducted on electricity pirates by officers of the Special Operations Unit during September this year.

This was made up of court fines amounting to Rs 3,864,000 and Rs 16,524,058.57 as compensation for revenue loss, the Power and Energy Ministry said in a press release.

The release said 334 instances of fraudulent electricity consumption were detected during the raids.Of these raids,177 related to manipulation of electricity metres and 157 instances of obtaining elctricity by using hooks on transmission lines. The CEB requests the public to help detect electricity pirates by informing of such instances on Telephone No 2422259.
