‘Missed calls’ the bane of misses

A Health Ministry survey revealed that the main cause for girls to become victims of abuse is the irresponsible use of mobile phones and the Internet, said Education Director W M Balasooriya.

become victims of abuse is the irresponsible use of mobile phones and the Internet, said Education Director W M Balasooriya. He was speaking at a meeting of Deputy School Principals in the Kurunegala District at the Bingiriya Youth Centre on October 9. “Seventy percent of such victims had faced these unfortunate abuses due to responding to “missed calls”, he said.

“Many girls have developed undue friendships by way of “miss” calls and thereby, they have continued such relationships with married males unknowingly. Many cases of such unlucky girls have been reported to Police stations from the Anuradhapura and Batticaloa Districts, “Balasooriya said. “When parents buy mobile phones for their female children, they should be watchful over the convervations that their female children have with outsiders.

'There are lustful married males who try to molest and rape young girls in the present day society. Parents and school teachers must be on the alert of the behaviour of adolescent girls than ever before” he said.
