Lankan nabbed with 110 magnet cards, encoder at BIA

A Sri Lankan passenger with 110 magnet cards and an encoder was arrested at the Bandaranaike International Airport on Thursday evening.

The man was travelling from Chennai.

The 25-year-old suspect is a resident of Mannar road, Nelukkulama, Vavuniya.

The magnet cards can be used as credit cards once data is fed using the encoder. Using the encoder, data from a credit card can be duplicated into a magnet card, the Police said.

Money in an account can also be withdrawn from this card.


Chain snatching woman arrested

A woman who snatched a gold chain from another woman and attempted to flee was arrested by the people in the vicinity in Vavuniya yesterday morning.

The 23 - year - old suspect, a resident of Trincomalee, snatched the chain valued at Rs 60,000 from another woman opposite a private bank along Horowpothana road and attempted to flee.

People in the vicinity caught her and handed the suspect with the chain to the Police.

She was produced before the Vavuniya magistrate yesterday.


Bogus doctor in the net

A man posing as a government certified practitioner using forged documents to operate two medical centres in Narammala and Thiligapola for over 12 years, was arrested by Narammala Police on Thursday.

The suspect, a resident of Talawakele, was remanded until October 17 by the Kuliyapitiya magistrate.


Man's body found

Kurunegala Police found the body of a man on Polattapitiya mountain near Athagala on Thursday.

Investigations revealed the body had been lying there for several days.

Police identified the deceased as R Chaminda,43, of Balangoda.

Police also found his mobile phone with a text message to a friend saying he was planning to commit suicide.

Kurunegala Police are investigating.


Treasure hunters remanded

Two suspects arrested for digging a land in Millapana in search of artefacts was remanded until October 17 by the Kegalle magistrate.

Narambedda Special Task Force personnel arrested the suspects.


Thieves remanded

Three suspects arrested in connection with 20 housebreaking incidents, were remanded until October 18 by the Aluthkade magistrate.

The suspects, residents of Rajagiriya and Mattakkuliya, were arrested at Arunodaya Mawatha, Obeysekarapura by Welikada Police on Wednesday.

The suspects had broken into houses at Welikada, Talangama, Wellampitiya and Borella.

Police seized vehicle spare parts, 24 mobile phones, two cameras, three lap top computers and accessories, a grinder and a welding plant from their possession.

Welikada Police are investigating.

Meanwhile, Dambagalla Police arrested a servant of a house in Obbegoda, who stole gold jewellery worth Rs 137,500 and Rs 11,000 from the house he was employed.

The police recovered the stolen goods and money from his possession. He was produced before the Monaragala magistrate yesterday.


Man arrested over son - in - law's death

Tanamalwila Police launched an investigation into the death of a 40 - year - old man.

Police arrested the victim's father - in - law in this connection.

Investigation revealed the suspect allegedly murdered the man who was under the influence of liquor, for assaulting his daughter.

Tanamalwila Police are investigating.


Two arrested with illegal copies of film

Two shop owners with 120 illegal copies of the Sinhala film Daruwane were arrested by the Colombo Crime Division in Colombo on Thursday.

One had 105 duplicate copies while the other had 15 for sale. The arrest was made following a complaint lodged by the manager of the film company.

They were produced in court yesterday.

Investigations are continuing.


Three bound for Australia nabbed

Negombo Police took into custody three persons, a crew of a vessel including its captain, and found the vessel floating at Talahena beach after an unsuccessful attempt to sail to Australia with asylum - seekers. The Police earlier arrested six persons waiting for the vessel.

The suspects were produced before the Negombo magistrate yesterday.
