New UN Report finding:
Over 60 year old will reach 4.1 m mark in 2026
The population of the over-sixty year old in Sri Lanka is expected to
grow from 1.7 million in 2001 to 4.1 million in 2026, which is a 141
percent increase during a 25 year period.
An important age-sex characteristic of the Sri Lankan population is
feminization of the over-sixty year old population. According to
findings in a new UN Report, the population of the over-60 year old is
expected to reach one billion within the decade.
A release issued by the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) states
that by 2050, 80 percent of the world’s older people will live in
developing countries and that 60 percent of the population will be
larger than the under 15 population in 2050. |
