Man mining sand dies in accident
A man mining sand died, when a mound of earth from the edge of a
river bank collapsed on him, while collecting sand at Dambulu Oya in
Barawila Kekirawa on Monday.
The victim was identified as V Sarath Ananda, 37, of Madatugama.
Kekirawa Police are investigating.
Skeleton found
Welikanda Police found a human skeleton near a cemetery in Welikanda.
An empty pesticide bottle was also found.
Police are investigating to ascertain the identity of the deceased.
Fire destroys 10 acres
Ten acres were destroyed in a fire in the Rahathankanda mountain
range in Buttala on Monday evening.
Buttala Police controlled the fire with the assistance of residents.
No one was injured. Investigations are continuing.
Illegal abattoir raided
Ja - Ela Police raided an illegal abattoir in Dandugama, Wahatiyagama
and arrested a suspect. The also found a buffalo that had already been
slaughtered.
Two buffaloes were saved. The suspect was produced before the Negombo
magistrate.
Suspects nabbed with cannabis
Nittambuwa Police arrested four suspects, including two soldiers,
with 3.498 kilos of cannabis at several locations on Monday.
The two soldiers, residents of Ruwanwella and Hanguranketha were
arrested at a hotel in Nittambuwa.
The other two , residents of Nittambuwa and Moragollawa were taken
into custody in Nittambuwa town while transporting the cannabis.
They were produced before the Attanagalla magistrate yesterday.
Asylum seekers remanded
The Negombo magistrate yesterday remanded six persons attempting to
illegally migrate to Australia from Thalahena beach on Monday.

Weligama police yesterday arrested 21 persons, including four women,
who attempted to leave for Australia from Weligama beach.
The group consisted of residents from Jaffna, Wennappuwa, Negombo and
Kodikamam. They were taken into custody at Henwala juncion while
travelling in a bus and a van to the beach.
Weligama Police are investigating.
Woman with heroin arrested
The Police Narcotics Bureau arrested a woman with 81.500 grams of
heroin and Rs 188,000 in Obesekarapura on Monday.
She was produced before the Aluthkade yesterday. Investigations are
continuing. |
