North Central Provincial Council Member, T M R Siripala was elected chairman of the Council at its inaugural sessions yesterday.

When the first session of the sixth NCPC commenced at 9.30 am yesterday two names - T M R Siripala and Amarakeerthi Athukorala (both UPFA) were proposed.

A secret ballot was held for the selection of the chairman. Thirty two members were present and out of them 21 voted in favour of Siripala. The other contestant, Amarakeerthi Athukorala received only ten votes. One member abstained from voting.

As it happened in the fifth Provincial Council of NCPC the candidate proposed by the UNP was elected chairman this time too. Siripala’s name was proposed by UNP member Anil Ratnayake whereas the name of Amarakeerthi Athukorala was proposed by Provincial Education Minister Peshala Jayaratne.
