Navy arrests six with conch shells

Naval personnel attached to the SLNS Vijaya of the North-western Naval Command on information received arrested six persons possessing 4,918 conch shells in the general area of Paramunai on October 1. The arrested persons with the items were handed over to Assistant Fisheries Director (Puttalam) for action.


Fatal ride

Gayan Rajapaksa and Amila Prabath Wanasinghe

A corporal attached to the second commando regiment died on the spot when the motorcycle he was riding skidded and crashed into an on coming motorcycle as he was trying to over take a three-wheeler at Horowpothana town on the Horowpothana Morawewa road on Monday morning. The deceased was identified as Upasaka Dewalage Dias Amarasooriya, a father of two of Morawewa. Horowpothana Police is investigating.


Public lecture

A public lecture delivered by Prof. Indra de Soysa on the topic ‘Enter the Dragon! Comparing Chinese and US Arms Transfers to Dictators and Violators of Human Rights’ will be held at the Kadirgamar Institute, “The Lighthouse”, No. 24, Horton Place, Colombo 7 on October 3 from 5 pm to 6 pm.


Marrs Hall celebrates diamond jubilee

The Hall of Residence, Marrs Hall, University of Peradeniya will mark its Diamond Jubilee by organizing a felicitation ceremony at Marrs Hall on Sunday October 7 at 11 am with the participation of the Vice Chancellor, Deputy Vice Chancellor, Warden, Sub Warden and the present students.

The Hall of Residence, Marrs Hall, University of Peradeniya named after the great educationists Dr. Robert Marrs was formerly opened on October 3 1952 with over 70 students taking up residence at Marrs Hall on this day.

The Marrs Hall Alumni Association founded in 1985 was promoted by students who were resident during the early days of Marrs Hall (1952-1965).


YMCA services

The Colombo YMCA will hold a chapel service, lobby service and counselling service from Monday to Friday as follows:

Chapel Service - Monday to Friday- 7.30 am to 7.50 am, 8 am to 8.30 am
Lobby Service - Every Wednesday from 12.45 pm to 1.30 pm
Counselling Service – Monday to Friday- 10 am to 3 pm


SLTB workshop to be leased out

The Kahagolla Regional workshop of the SLTB in Diyatalawa which was given over to the private sector will be leased out to the Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment by the State Resources and Enterprise Development Ministry.

The SLBFE said it hoped to develop the facility as a special training complex for expatiate workers going for employment abroad as soon as the property is duly transferred. A press release by the SLBFE states the Ministry had decided to lease the workshop to the Bureau in response a request made by Foreign Employment promotion and welfare Minister Dilan Perera on the directors of the President.

K.Y. Mahesh Sanjeewa, 29, of No 2, Francis Kandamby Mawatha, Wewahamanduwa, Matara is suffering from acute renal failure. Doctors treating him have recommended a kidney transplant to save his life.
