The NDB would increase the number of savings accounts up to 150,000 at 70 branches islandwide within the next three to five years with the launch of a unique savings proposition "Real Saver."

This was revealed by Vice President and Head of SME and Retail Banking of NDB Bank, Raj Aboobucker at the Cinnamon Lakeside Hotel in Colombo yesterday. The launch of 'Real Saver' account, coincides with the World Thrift Month, which recognizes and rewards the real savers who understand the true meaning of saving and adopt it to their lifestyle.

"Real Saver, is a rewarding savings account that doubles the interest rate applicable on the account balance, if a committed minimum monthly deposit is maintained with minimum withdrawals, thereby encouraging the account holders to save continuously, CEO of NDB Russel de Mel said.

The NDB strongly believes that fostering the habit of saving is essential in taking the country towards prosperity. The dynamic proposition put forward by the "Ithiri Karamu, Api Hedemu, Rata Hadamu savings drive, initiated by the NDB previously, gave wing to this endeavour, spreading it across the country to people of all walks of life, De Mel said. Elaborating on real saving, de Mel added that real savers not only save money, but also eliminate wastage of any form and through Real Saver, the NDB hopes to advocate responsible consumption of resources, while accumulating financial savings. NDB's "Ithuru Karana Maga" savings proposition, points out the savings made on essentials such as water, electricity, telephones, time and even environment would translate into monetary savings in the long term.

NDB Real Saver account promises the beginning of a new chapter in the lives of the regular savers and can be easily opened at any one of the NDB branches, island wide.
