Man clubbed to death

A 21 - year - old man died after he was assaulted by a group of people at his home in Hendala, Wattala on Wednesday.

The incident occurred when the victim, Francis Suranjith and his father who had a devala at their home were making offerings.

Modera Police are investigating to arrest the suspects.


Jumbo attacks mahout

A 43 - year - old mahout died at Dambulla Hospital after he was attacked by an elephant at the Special Elephant Safari location in Dambulla on Wednesday.

The victim was identified as V B Nanadasena of Haliela, Badulla. Habarana Police are investigating.


Fisherman drowns

A fisherman drowned when a boat capsised in Ellewela tank in Hakmana on Wednesday.

Two others in the boat escaped. Police identified the deceased as S Dimon Hendri of Eeriyatota, Kamburupitiya.


Man jumps into river to evade arrest

The body of a man who evaded police arrest by jumping into the Kelani River, was found two days later near Kalu Palama in Peliyagoda.

The Peliyagoda Police Crime Branch attempted to arrest the man during a raid in search of narcotics at a house near the Kelani River on the Kelaniya- Biyagama road on Monday afternoon. The man had then jumped into the river.

The Police with Navy divers' assistance led a search operation to find him. The victim was identified as K V Upul Kumara.

The post - mortem revealed that the man had drowned. Peliyagoda Police are investigating.


Cannabis on wheels seized

Wellawaya Police arrested two suspects with 7.500 kilo grammes of cannabis while being transported in a lorry at Yalabowa on Wellawaya- Tissa road on Wednesday. The Police stopped the vehicle on suspicion and found the stock of cannabis packed in 18 bags. They were produced before the Wellawaya magistrate yesterday.


Son dies at mom's funeral

A man died after falling into a well after consuming liquor during his mother's funeral at Pattigama, Mawanella on Tuesday. W H M Navaratne Banda, 51, of Daulagala had come to his mother's funeral in Mawanella with another friend. They consumed liquor sitting on the edge of the well behind the house. Banda had accidentally fallen into the well. Police arrested Banda's friend.
