'Child becomes complete personality with knowledge'

'Teachers have a special role to play in creating a society equipped with knowledge and high moral values. Therefore teachers should dedicate themselves more vigorously towards performing this vital responsibility," said Senior Minister of International Financial Corporation Dr. Sarath Amunugama.

He was addressing a meeting of teachers representatives held at the Amunugama Centre, Nugawela recently.

The meeting was organized by Kandy District Parliamentarian Dilum Amunugama.

Dr. Amunugama said citizens with a good personality were needed to fulfill the task of taking the country and society along its forward march. A child became a complete personality once equipped with knowledge, creative talents and skills and good attitudes. It is through the school system that such a group of citizens could be bequeathed to the country when the student population totaling four to five million studying in schools countrywide were armed with knowledge positive attitudes and skills the country and society would become a good place to live in.

Dr. Amunugama said an increase in thuggery, hatred and sex crimes was a dangerous challenge and threat posed to society today. This proved that wealth and material development had debased society to a certain extent.

This trend cast a vital responsibility in parents and teachers to lead their children and charges on the correct track. Kandy District MP Dilum Amunugama also spoke.
