Thai cooking demo for media

The miracle in Thai cuisine of balancing five flavours – spicy, salty, sweet, sour and bitter - was displayed recently during a Thai food cooking demonstration at the Thai Ambassador to Sri Lanka Poldej Worachat residence recently.

The Thai food cooking demonstration was conducted under the expert guidance of Kanyarat Worachat, wife of Thai Ambassador. The demonstration was meant for media personnel from all the leading media institutions in the country. Most of the invited journalists were taken to Thailand under the “Sri Lankan Media FAM trip to Thailand” project organized by the Royal Thai Embassy. During the demonstration, Madam Kanyarat Worachat invited media personnel to lend a hand in preparation of couple of dishes.

Demonstration is completely hands-on, encouraging invitees to practice Thai cooking techniques. She demonstrated how to cook two famous Thai dishes, Som Tam (Raw Papaya Salad) and Keang Keaw Wan Kung (Prawn Green Curry) in a cordial and informal atmosphere.

At her personal cooking station, she guided invitees through the recipe step-by-step as they cook the dish. At the end of the demonstration a delicious two-course meal prepared by media personnel were set up for lunch. Thai cuisine is well known for diversity of ingredients, complex spiciness and intricate flavours and aromas. Many Thai dishes are even prepared with a blend of herbal ingredients that are purported to have health benefits.

There is such a broad range of favorite Thai food dishes available that many people will come to Thailand and it has now become more popular in Sri Lanka as well.

An important principle of Thai food is a balance of five flavors – spicy, salty, sweet, sour and bitter.

The one indispensable ingredient which is used in seasoning many Thai dishes is fish sauce. Fish sauce is considered an essential ingredient in Thai cooking in much the same way as soy sauce is important to Thai cooking. Also present at this Thai food cooking demonstration was the First Secretary of the Royal Thai Embassy Panuwat Prommanon and President of the Thailand-Sri Lanka Society Nirmalie Ganatilleke.
