K P Tharushi Himala Silva, a grade 12 student of Panadura Balika Maha Vidyalaya has leukaemeia. She needs a bone marrow transplant which costs Rs 7 million.

Prize day

The annual prize giving of D B Welagedara Madya Maha Vidyalaya, Malkaduwawa, Kurunegala will be held on October 5.

Dr P Chandra Peiris will be the Chief Guest. Zonal education director, Kurunegala, Sirimewan Podinilame and provincial director K Rathnamala will also participate.


Work in progress on Nallathanikulam

Nallathanikulam in Pooneryn is being reconstructed on the direction of Parliamentarian Namal Rajapaksa. Rajapaksa inspected Nallathanikulam on September 24 to see the work in progress. Director of Irrigation K S Sivapatham and Deputy Director of Irrigation N Suthakaran welcomed the parliamentarian on arrival.

Pooneryn which was badly affected by the drought has been provided facilities by the government on the direction of Economic Development Minister Basil Rajapaksa and Parliamentarian Namal Rajapaksa.


Unregistered marriages on the rise

There are a large number of unregistered marriages in Galgamuwa, Giribawa, Maho, Polpitigama and Bingiriya areas, according to a survey carried out by a team of voluntary social service workers.

“Owing to this situation, children of these couples are found to have incomplete birth certificates.

“This is a social problem that challenges the integrity of the children”, a spokesman for the team said.


More jobs for graduates

The graduates who passed out from universities in 2010 and 2011 will be recruited to the government service. About 8,000 graduates are expected to be recruited this year, former Bingiriya Divisional Secretary W M Jayathilake said.

The graduates who were recruited earlier, will be absorbed into the permanent government service under the instructions of President Mahinda Rajapaksa.

Secretary to the Ministry of Public Administration and Home Affairs P B Abeykoon has made arrangements to present appointment letters to graduates at the District Secretariat level.


State Literary Festival

The State Literary Festival will be held at Pathlegedara Teachers’ Training College, Veyangoda, on September 30 at 2.00 pm.

Three authors who have rendered a great service to the literary field are to be felicitated by offering each with cash awards of Rs 75,000 and the Sahithya Ratna award.

The Economic Development Minister Basil Rajapaksa will be the chief guest.


Bo sapling planting

Education Minister Bandula Gunawardana will plant a bo sapling at the premises of the cetiya built at the Colombo Isipathana Vidyalaya Primary section on September 28 at 10 am.

The Bo sapling will be brought in a special motorcade from the Dehiwala Gal Viharaya premises.


Father accidentally runs over two-year-old

A father accidentally ran over his two-year-old daughter in his bus at Karuwalagaswewa in Thabbowa.

The Police said the accident took place when the father had asked the victim’s mother to bring a bottle of water.

The little girl who also accompanied the mother had stood in front of the bus which was parked near their house.


Barathnatya Arangetram

The Bharathanatya Arangetram of Miss Aarani Mohanasundaram, disciple of Divya Sivanesan, Director of Abhinayakshetra dancing school and an expert in Bharatha Dancing and the musical instrument the mirutangkam, takes place at 5.30 p.m on September 29 at the Ramakrishna hall in Wellawatte.


NCP Chief Minister assumes duties today

The new North Central Provincial Council Chief Minister SM Ranjith Samarakoon will assume duties at the Chief Minister's office in Anuradhapura today at 9.01 am.


Karunasena Jayalath commemoration

A ceremony to commemorate late author Karunasena Jayalath jointly organized by the Karunasena Jayalath Memorial Foundation and the Horana UC will be held at the Horana Town Hall to coincide with the Urban Council's Sahitya Day celebrations on October 1.

A highlight will be the opening of a Jayalath Memorial Children's Library and a Conservation Laboratory of Jayalath's books and other documents. The agenda also includes the felicitation of Horana Rajamaha Viharadhipathi Ven Horana Pannasekera Nayake thera and Senior Minister Ratnasiri Wickramanayake.

The guest lecture titled “Literary service of Karunasena Jayalath” will be delivered by Ven Beragama Amitha Nayake Thera.

Local Government and Provincial Councils Minister A L M Athaulla and several other Ministers and MPs and literary personalities will be present on the occasion.


Seminar

A seminar to create awareness about Persons with Special Needs entitled ‘Your Special Child, Challenges and Resources,’ organized by a group of parents, will be held on September 29 at 8.30 am at the Auditorium of the Cathedral of Christ the Living Saviour (next to BMICH), Bauddhaloka Mawatha.

Participation is by prior registration. Due to limited availability of seats, persons wishing to attend are requested to register early by calling Samantha (on 0777-398879) or Nilmini (0777-374325).

The seminar which is intended to benefit parents, teachers and caregivers of persons with special needs, will deal with common conditions such as Downs Syndrome, Autism, Cerebral Palsy, their causes, medical issues, Psychological Aspects, Coping Strategies for Parents and also practical aspects, such as, Speech Therapy, Occupational Therapy and Educational matters. Leading professionals in the field including, a Consultant Paediatrician, a Psychiatrist, Speech and Occupational Therapists and an Educational Psychologist will address the seminar.

The 59th annual sale and good news fair organized by the Ceylon Bible Society will be held on September 29 at 9 am onwards at the Christian Reformed Church, Wellawatte, Colombo 6.


Training seminar

A training seminar on Enhancement of Quality and Productivity in Laboratories will be conducted by the Institute of Chemistry Ceylon at Plastics and Rubber Institute of Sri Lanka, Rajagiriya on October 18.

There is a need to focus our future thinking on better management of the analytical quality of laboratory tests and high quality and productivity of research and development laboratories in the midst of our preoccupation with the profound changes that are taking place in the industrial world.

This seminar intends to provide modern concepts on enhancement of quality and productivity in laboratories to Managers, Industrialists, Researchers and Executives dealing with laboratories and also for those who intend to venture into these fields.
