Monaragala to get multipurpose building with Japanese grant

Japan has provided a 45,551 US dollar grant aid for a rural infrastructure development project in Monaragala district under its Grant Assistance for Grass roots Human Security Projects (GGP).

The project is for constructing a multipurpose building which would consist of a community hall, library, preschool, children’s park, health clinic centre and offices for Public Health Inspector and Grama Niladari. The project will be implemented by the Dimuthu Community Development Society.

Japanese Ambassador to Sri Lanka Nobohito Hobo said at the Grant Contract Signing Ceremony of GGP at his residence yesterday that considering Japan’s own history of development, it is evident that rural and human resource development plays a leading role in the development of a whole country.

“This project will benefit over 5,000 families and support the government's policy to promote ‘Seva Piyasa’ he said. “I believe that this project would contribute greatly to facilitating development of rural areas and human resources, and thereby enhance national development of Sri Lanka” the ambassador said.

He also said Japan and Sri Lanka commemorate the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations this year. During the last six decades, the two countries have maintained a strong partnership through a number of mutual collaborations. The Japanese Embassy is carrying out a number of events to celebrate the anniversary. Political, economical and cultural ties would be further enhanced and developed . Dimuthu Community Development Society president Ven.

Nagolle Nandarathana Thera said having a multipurpose building for the underprivileged community in the area was a long felt need.

People had to travel from one place to another to get different services. Japanese Embassy Head of Economic Cooperation Suguru Minoya, Second Secretary Toyoteru Doi, GGP Consultants Risa Ichishi and Lasantha Jayawardana and Economic Cooperation Secretary Sunila de Alwis participated on the occasion.
