Pre plan your work

Dear children,

How many of you work according to a timetable? Some of you must be planning your day before it starts, yet I am sure there are also those who do not pre plan their work. Those who work according to a schedule can tell you about its benefits.

During week days all of you attend school. Afterwards you may have to attend tuition classes. During Saturdays and Sundays too some of you may be attending extra classes. However on days you do not have tuition classes you are free to do work of your choice. Hence it is wise to prepare a timetable and hang it on the wall of your room or keep it in a prominently visible place so that you see it often.

At the beginning of each week you can plan the work you are going to do during the course of the week. Give equal prominence to all your school subjects.

But if you feel that your performance is poor in a certain subject do not forget to allocate extra time to study that particular subject.

Allocate time to spend with your friends and parents too. There should be some free time to engage in your hobbies. The life stories of eminent personalities who have created history reveal that many of them have pre planned their work. The students who obtain highest results at examinations have always worked according to a timetable.

Determine to work according to a timetable from today itself if you are still not doing it. I am sure it will help you reach great heights in life.

Bye for now,

Sunny Stories:

Reward for Kindness

“Father, can you please take me to the book fair this morning?” Sandun asked Father last Saturday.

“I am sorry son,” said Father. “I have to go to office today.”

Books as presents

Sandun looked sad. “I was hoping to buy some books with the voucher you gave me for my birthday” he said.

“I know what we can do,” said Father. “If you come with Grandpa I can drop you at the book fair on my way to the office.”

Sandun brightened up. He ran to find Grandpa.

“Can you please come with me to the book fair, Grandpa?” he asked Grandpa.

“Well..” Grandpa thought for a moment. “I don’t have anything to do this morning. Yes, I might as well take you to the book fair.”

Father dropped Grandpa and Sandun at the main entrance to the book fair. As they walked towards the bookstalls Grandpa asked Sandun,

“What books are you planning to buy, son?”

“I am not going to buy anything for myself, Grandpa,” said Sandun. “I am going to buy books for Damith, Tharidu and Isuri with the book voucher Father and Mother gave me for my birthday.”

“The names sound familiar. But I cannot remember who Damith, Tharidu and Isuri are.”

“Why Grandpa, don’t you remember, they are Aunty Chandra’s children. Aunty Chandra comes to cook and clean for Grandma Rita. I met her children two weeks ago when she brought her children with her because her mother was ill and there was no one to look after them.”

“I see,” said Grandpa.

Sandun continued to explain. “Aunty Chandra has no money to buy them books. I know they like to read. When I showed them some of my books they said they had never seen such beautiful books ever before. I thought I would buy them as many books as I could with my voucher.”

“I am proud of you Sandun,” said Grandpa as they stepped into the main hall at the book fair. Sandun went through the children’s books and selected books he knew his new friends would love to read.

Then his eyes fell on a book that explained everything about planet earth. He flicked through the pages eagerly. The pictures and the descriptions fascinated him. He turned to the back of the book to check the price. If he bought this book he would not be able to buy a single book for his friends. He placed the book back on the shelf.

Sandun calculated in his mind how much he would have to pay for the books he had selected for his friends. To his dismay he realized the book voucher was not enough to pay for all the books. He needed more money.

He went to Grandpa. “Grandpa, are you thinking of buying me a cup of noodles, everyone else is eating, after I finished buying the books?”

Grandpa smiled. “Yes, I thought you too might like to have one.”

“Are you also planning to buy me an ice cream?”

“If you want one, I don’t mind buying you an ice cream as well.”

“Grandpa, I don’t want the cup of noodles and the ice cream. Can you please give that money to me so that I can buy two more books for my friends.”

“Here you are,” said Grandpa, giving Sandun two hundred rupees.

Sandun and Grandpa walked around the bookstalls for another half hour, stepped into the Guru Gedera - the meeting place for writers and readers, where Grandpa chatted with one of his favourite writers and finally decided it was time to go home. Just as they started to walk towards the gate someone slapped Grandpa on his back.

“Hello Ari.”

“Hello, Sube” said Grandpa. “How good to see you after such a long time.”

“Yes, indeed,” said Grandpa’s friend. “And who is this little fellow you have here?” He said turning towards Sandun. “I see you have bought quite a lot of books.”

“This is Sandun, my grandson” said Grandpa. “These books are for three of his friends.

He did not buy a single book for himself.”

When Grandpa explained to his friend about Chandra’s children and how Sandun wanted to give them books as presents Grandpa’s friend said “Come with me son. Show me a book you would like to read. Do not worry about the price. I will buy the book for you.”

When Sandun started to protest saying he can wait till his next birthday to buy what he wanted, Grandpa’s friend said, “I am giving you a present in the same way you will be giving books to your friends. You must accept my present.”

Sandun ran to the shelf where he had seen the book about the earth. He was going to read the book after all. He could not help smiling. He felt immensely happy. He knew his friends would be happy too when they saw the books he had bought for them.

Mahabharatha

The great sage Veda Vyasa conceived a beautiful poem in his mind. He called it Mahabharatha and wanted to enable the future generations to read. In fact, Brahma, the creater of the universe told this after hearing the Mahabharatha verses to Veda Vyasa. Veda Vyasa wanted this poem to be written by Lord Ganesha.

He prayed and Lord Ganesha appeared before him. Then Veda Vyasa with utter humility requested Lord Ganesha to write this.Lord Ganesha agreed, but laid a condition that when he starts writing fast Veda Vyasa should not stop him. Even Veda Vyasa laid a condition that Lord Ganesha while writing should understand the meaning of the verses and write the Mahabharatha.

Both agreed and sticked to these conditions and started writing Mahabharatha which is considered to be a remarkable epic narrated by Veda Vyasa and written by Lord Ganesha for the good of the future generation.
