Colombo District Judge Dhammika Ganepola yesterday ordered written
submissions to be filed on October 8 in the petition filed by the
Associated Newspapers of Ceylon Ltd (ANCL) requesting to quash an ex-partie
ruling by the Colombo District Court in a defamation action filed
against ANCL by UNP Parliamentarian Wijedasa Rajapaksha.
The case is in respect of an article published by the Sinhalese
weekly Silumina on November 7, 2007 titled Wijedasa Atharamanvei (Wijedasa
gets stranded) which the plaintiff claimed contained defamatory material
against his good name and claimed Rs.500 million as damages.
Deputy Speaker Chandima Weerakkody, a witness for the respondent ANCL
said that plaintiff had told in Parliament that he is going abroad with
MP Ramesh Pathirana.
The witness had filed a motion not to call the case on that date.
When the case was taken up, witnesses for petitioner (ANCL)were
cross-examined by Attorney at Law Romesh Silva PC appearing for the
petitioner. |
