CPA Northern Province tour September 13:

Northern progress pleases delegates

A tour to the Northern Province was arranged by CPA Sri Lanka branch under the directions of the Speaker, due to many requests from the delegates to visit the Northern Province, said a CPA press release.

The release said: "Altogether 70 delegates from many countries, including United Kingdom, Canada, New Zealand, Nigeria, Scotland, Australia, South Africa, Uganda, Gayana, Swaziland, Maldives, Kenya, Tanzania, Northern Ireland and Malaysia participated in this tour.

Several Speakers took part in the Northern Province tour. CPA Vice President Minwa Johannes Mahliangu, CPA Secretary-General Dr. William Shija and CPA Treasurer Marwick Khumalo also joined the tour.

The delegation arrived at the Palaly Airport in Jaffna and was warmly welcomed by Douglas Devananda, Minister of Traditional Industries and Small Enterprise Development, together with the Jaffna GA and the Secretary to the Governor.

Presentations were made to the delegates by the Secretary to the Governor regarding the development activities in the District of Jaffna while they were enjoying breakfast at Tilko Hotel in Jaffna city.

The delegation visited Ariyalail Resettlement village at Mahendrapuram and spoke to the residents. They had a look round the Jaffna Public Library and a presentation was made regarding the historical importance of Jaffna.

The Delegation enjoyed their lunch at the Army Headquarters in Kilinochchi and were briefed about the resettlement work done in the area.They visited the district General hospital in Kilinochchi. A foreigner engaged in demining, explained his experiences and progress up to date. They visited the newly constructed main electricity Grid station in Ananthapuram, Kilinochchi and part of Mulliativu area.

Previous negative perceptions of the North were changed and the delegates were highly impressed about the development work completed so far and ongoing process of development activities with regard to roads, buildings, etc. The elegates themselves shared their views very positively at those places.

It had been a very successful tour according to the delegates.
