Errant milk powder traders face the music

Legal action has been taken against 66 errant traders and one milk powder importer who sold infant milk powder at higher prices than the stipulated controlled price.

Co-operatives and Internal Trade Minister Johnston Fernando instructed Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA) chairman Rumi Marzook to intensify raids to arrest those who violate laws.

A CAA spokesman said Minister Fernando also ordered the CAA chairman to take action against any trader who charges higher prices for infant milk powder. "We received complaints about infant milk powder being sold at a high price. We hope to increase raids and have also taken measures to deploy mobile raiding units to crackdown on fraudulent vendors," he said.

He said consumers can complain against errant traders and infant milk powder importers on 0117755481, 0117755482 or 0771088922.

Meanwhile, it is also prohibited to add colouring or additives to rice or any other grain varieties sold in the market.
