Tamil Union fast bowler Madusanka Ekanayake helped to restrict Moors
SC first innings to116 runs by capturing five wickets for 33 runs before
Tamil Union scored 204 runs for eight wickets at stumps on the first day
of the under-23 cricket final played at the Colts grounds, Havelock
Park, Colombo yesterday.
With help of overcast weather condition, right arm fast bowler
Ekanayake had vicious spells in the morning session as Moors slumped for
62 for six wickets at lunch. Tamil Union dominated the morning session
after Moors captain Ashan Priyanjan opted to bowl first after winning
the toss.
Within the first half an hour after lunch break, Moors were bowled
out for disastrous 116 runs. However, right handed Nipuna Kariyawasam
cracked a brisk 49 runs not out later in the Moors innings.
After Tamil Union resumed their first innings, Sajith Kelumpriya, who
is in good form with the bat scored 39 runs.
Ashen Silva and all-rounder Chathuranga de Silva chipped in with 31
runs each. For Moors, all-rounder Shehan Jayasuriya had three wickets
for 54 runs and Chamikara Edirisinghe and Nipuna Kariyawasam had two
scalps each. It was a bowlers’ paradise yesterday, as not a single
batsman scored a half century and 18 wickets were collapsed o the day.
At the end of the first day of the three-day match, Tamil Union are
leading 88 runs in the first innings with two wickets in hand. Matheesha
Perera not out on 21 and Chamod Pathirana unbeaten on 11 were at the
crease.
The play will resume for the second day at 10 am at the Colts grounds
today. Moors first innings 116 in 34.2 overs (Nipuna Kariyawasam 49 n.o,
